Dr. Andrew Weil is an author and a leader within the world of integrative medicine. He has degrees in biology and medicine from Harvard University. His innovative work has helped to change the way many people look at health and vitality. He believes that integrative medicine is an effective and intelligent combination of mainstream and alternative medicine. His central focus is that modern medicine does have a place, but that it is best purposed as a method of resolving a medical crisis. He believes that alternatives to medicine/alternative medicine can be most useful as a means to prevent a crisis from ever happening.

He has been writing articles and books for over thirty years. He has even had a column in Time magazine in which he answered the questions of readers. His books focus on ways in which you can become healthier by eating a simple diet. Also, He would have the reader look to replace all artificial flavorings and sweeteners with natural ones.

Originally known for his role on “Cheers”, John is now more well known for his voice acting in all of the Pixar movies, and his own television show called "John Ratzenberger's Made in America". For the show, he visited factories around the United States. After seeing that few young workers were in the factories, John decided to create the Nuts, Bolts and Thingamajigs Foundation. The foundation helps children to learn about working with the hands and their brains, in order to be able to invent, build and tinker.

“I can think of no enterprise more worthy than one devoted to kids tinkering,” John says.

Names and Naming - part 3

In the January 2009 edition of the Social Science Quarterly it was reported that there is a possible link between having an unpopular name and ending up in trouble as a teen boy. The Shippensburg University economics professors David Kalist and Daniel Lee gathered up four years' worth of boy names (15,000 in all) from one state's birth records and compared them with the first names of about half of that state's juvenile delinquent males born in those years. They found that the more unpopular the name, the more likely it was to be associated with kids who ended up with substantiated charges in the juvenile justice system.

The Mexican state of Chihuahua has recently begun enforcing strict rules on what parents can name their child, and even how his or her name is spelled. Chihuahua state officials say the law is not anything new, but with a recent rash of parents trying to name their children odd names they say it's time to remind the public of what is appropriate and what is not. If a parent names their child what's considered a "foreign" name, like Kevin, Brian, or Karen, it must be followed by a Spanish middle name. Spelling is also an issue with the state of Chihuahua, as the spelling must be a "common spelling." Officials add that the law is intended to keep children from being ridiculed, and having future legal trouble with their name.

Many cultures have different traditions when it comes to naming a child. In the West many people have turned to the Bible to name their children, as some believe that Biblical names may predict what a child's personality will eventually be shaped into. Of course, you probably wouldn't name your child "Cain", but according to the site "Biblical Baby Names", David and Alexandra are among the top names used from the bible. David means "beloved" and Alexandra means "Defender of men".

Names and Naming - part 2

Traditionally, the name given a child is considered to be a matter of great importance, as it can have considerable influence on the development of that child's character. Our parents named us for a reason. The names that they chose for us were important choices for them. Our names resonated within them. Today, parents will often stress over whether or not a particular name will help a child to succeed, and perhaps not get picked on. In the past, our parents might have named us in a way that honored important family figures. Different cultures and tradition, such within the Jewish culture and Africans, have their own particular customs.

However, there are particular names that our parents just wouldn’t choose for us. Recently, there was a court case in which a judge in New Zealand made a young girl a ward of court so that she could change the name she hated - Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii.

A New Jersey couple was recently in the news because a grocery store refused to letter a cake with their sons name. They had named him “Adolf Hitler Campbell”, and they had chosen equally disturbing names for their other children as well. A New York times article interviewed a Rutger professor of law, who specialized in juvenile rights, to get a clear picture of what might happen for this boy in the future. The professor, Laura Cohen,  said that, “Looking ahead, you could imagine the state making an argument that the ShopRite rejection is a precursor of things to come,” explaining that the concern would be that the children would be “subject to lifelong ridicule and harassment.”

This small bit of poetry from Hafiz makes me wonder what would happen if we could all let go of our inner critics? I’m not suggesting that we sweep everything under the rug. We still need to look at our shadow side.

But, when you have compassion for yourself the world can “change” around you. I know that it has worked for me.  It’s really about finding a way to honor all the parts of yourself. For example, when you honor the part of yourself that is frustrated at someone or something, you can then accept others when they too are frustrated and perhaps hard to get along with. It's about recognizing how great we all can be, regardless of the circumstances.

Names and Naming - part 1

Roy Feinson, author of “The Animal in You” and “Secret Universe of Names” has done extensive research around how our names impact our lives financially, charismatically, and spiritually. He may have found some of his inspiration from a saying in the Bible. It is, "Like his name, so is he," (1 Samuel 25:25) or, “kishmo ken hu,” which means that a person’s name can represent his or her true character.

Much of his work has been based on US Census Bureau studies. In particular the 1990 study in which he cross referenced 63 million names (the first, and last initials were provided) of the participants. He recognized that it was a small study, but came up with many fascinating results. For example, those people with the first initial of “J”, were almost 3 times more likely to be financially well off than those whose first initial was “N”. 

He also found that people whose first initial was B, T, J, C, K, or D (strongly pronounced letters) , were better at sports, and often proved to be highly successful within the sports world. Letters that showed leader leadership and strength (J, D, T, B, P, G, and I) helped people to climb to the top within business and politics.

He does recognize that there are a variety of sociological, psychological and demographic influences that account for the studies findings. However, the real importance of this study shows that our names can have a profound influence on our lives, and the letters in our names seem to have relevance to the way in which we forge our path in life.

Smashing plates

Recently I read about a shop in San Diego where customers pay to go in and smash plates and things! The smashing is done in special "break rooms" where customers wear safety gear and throw breakables at a wall. I guess it's a great way to work on releasing anger and your other personal issues.

However you handle your anger there is new research showing that anger and hostility are significantly associated with a higher risk for  heart issues for almost anyone, especially patients with existing heart disease. And, I believe that one primary reason for being angry with ourselves, is that we're not paying attention to our hearts. We're not working on what is truly important for us. We may put our dreams on hold for many reasons, but it's vital to our physical, emotional and spiritual health that we find a way to incorporate our spirit and soul into our lives.

Numerology and Dreams - part 2

In part 1 of this series we talked about looking at the basic parts of your dreams, now as you continue to delve into the process of understanding your dreams, please remember that the Dream Tool can be an invaluable aid. One of the helpful resources that it indicates is the particular Tarot cards related to the the numbers in your dream, whether its a night dream, daydream or a waking dream. In our example case of a dream that contained 3 or 9 we could look at the Empress Card and the Hermit Card. The meanings of these two cards could be very important to your unlocking the messages of the dream.

The Empress card can be about productivity, creativity, inspiration, abundance and procreation. This card describes a person who is productive, possibly prolific, especially in the creative arts or sciences. However everything occurs in its own time. This card can also represent an individual who is very close to nature and in touch with the physical world.

We have all heard the phrase: "burning the candle on both ends". This phrase can refer to you if you are especially prolific and constantly busy. Just like the campfire, you are constantly crackling and roaring. Without proper adjustments you can burn yourself out. There are many levels of meaning and understanding that can go with any symbol. Where you are in your life at a given moment will also color the meaning of symbols.

Also, consider the fact that fire needs something to burn. Fire does not exist alone. Fire needs air and a material to burn. If you were having the campfire dream you might want to ask yourself how you were fueling your own needs. This includes physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. The questions you might want to ask would be:

•     Am I eating properly?
•     Am I getting enough rest?
•     Am I spreading myself to thin?
•     Am I paying attention to the needs of those around me?
•     Am I being overly demanding?
•     Am I being demanding enough?
•     Am I being supportive?

You may want to consider that the comforting fire in your dream is a loved one, or someone that you draw inspiration, hope, courage, and stamina from. You then may want to analyze some basic Numerology readings for that yourself and person so that you can get a better understanding about him/her and your relationship together.

The language of dreams can be complex. Learning the signs, symbols and symbolism is a very important cornerstone to your overall success in understanding and working with your dreams.  Numerology can be a great aid this undertaking.

Can Numerology tell me if I am going to have a a good or bad year

I am often asked if Numerology can be used to determine if someone is going to have a good or bad year. First, being conscious is vital to leading a healthy life. Within numerology the general theme of each year, month and day can be illustrated. It can help you to clearly see into the past, present, or  future. But, how you experience a particular moment of time is up to you.

For instance, if you are experiencing a Personal Year of 9, it can provide experiences for change, endings and new opportunities. A Personal Year of 9 can be experienced with grief of the potential loss that is possible, or you can work with compassion and gratitude to be thankful for life itself and everything that is still within your life.

Remember, you are the architect of your personality and character. Your personal numbers can help you to learn about, develop and nurture different areas of your personality. But, they do not predetermine how you will live or who you will become. You have free will. Live your life as consciously as possible and you can have a good year.
